Katashimo Winery is located in Kashiwara City (Osaka Prefecture) in an area of long grape and wine tradition. It is believed that grapes crossed the Silk Road and entered Japan along with Buddhism about 1300 ago. Right from the start we have been making "wines that suit the Japanese palate". Risaburo Takai pioneered the grape-growing region by cultivating the slopes of Kawachi Katashimo Village, and his successor Sakujiro Takai noticed that "there are alcoholic beverages made from grapes overseas," and decided to find a way to make wine himself. He began working with sake breweries to find a way to turn grapes into alcoholic beverages and started to produce wine. The first name of the company could be translated as ”Katashimo Wine Brewery", the predecessor of nowadays Katashimo Winery. However, Sakujiro Takai and his employees were not familiar with overseas wine production methods. The production method they used was a unique method that applied knowledge from sake, miso, vinegar, etc. Finally, in 1914 they successfully made their first wine which was ready for shipment in 1917.
At Katashimo Winery, we grow our grapes on trellises that span out in 4 directions because it is very suited to Osaka's climate. This is because it is very suitable for Osaka's climate. Avoiding the harsh direct sunlight in mid-summer produces very good grapes.
All of our farms are committed to reducing pesticides without the use of herbicides, and organic fertilizers are used whenever possible. All of our grapes are grown with less than one-third the amount of pesticides commonly used and therefore are certified as eco-friendly agricultural products by the Osaka Prefectural government. We also use organic fertilizers whenever possible, mainly grape pomace and naturally occurring minerals, etc. In 2018, we received the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award at the Award for Excellence in Local Production for Local Consumption.

Wines that can only be made and tasted here in Osaka. Our Katashimo Winery wines are clearly different from wines from overseas with Japanese methods and sincerity.
